This weekend, we want you to let loose from the gate and horse around… it’s Kentucky Derby Time!

What better way to celebrate the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown than with some traditional down-home recipes by our very own Chef Angela Carlino. We’ll help you create an authentic Louisville experience with two southern staples that will wow your Derby Party guests and transport your taste buds straight to Churchill Downs!

Today we’ll start with a refreshing virgin Mint Julep. Traditionally, Mint Juleps are made with bourbon, water, sugar and fresh mint. We’ll be trading the bourbon for ginger ale so the whole family can enjoy, but feel free to slip in some whiskey if your looking for a more authentic taste!

Virgin Mint Julep

Ingredients

1 bunch fresh mint leaves, rinsed

1 liter ginger ale, chilled

Juice of 1 lemon

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup water

crushed ice

Directions

In a small saucepan, add lemon juice, sugar and water, stir.

Over medium to medium low heat, continue to stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Place mint leaves in a heat resistant bowl or container and pour the acidulated sugar water over the leaves.  Refrigerate and allow to steep for about 30 minutes, or until mixture cools completely.

When ready to assemble and serve, pour chilled lemon mint liquid, ginger ale and ice in a large pitcher.  Stir for about 1 minute.

Serve immediately.

Serving suggestion

For a traditional presentation, serve in a silver or pewter glass to truly wow your Derby guests.

Look out tomorrow for another down-home favorite; Kentucky Hot Brown!
